Is it really made of Gold?
"Golden Knee Replacement" is not made entirely of gold. These implants contain little or no elemental gold.
Depending on the manufacturer, the special coating in the vast majority of implants marketed as "Gold Knee Replacement" may be:
- Titanium Nitride (TiN) — gold coloured (most common)
- Zirconium Nitride (ZrN)
- Titanium Niobium Nitride (TiNbN)
In a few specialised implants, a thin surface layer containing gold is used, but this is uncommon. The familiar "gold" appearance is usually due to the coating rather than the presence of solid gold.
Why are these special coatings used?
The coating aims to:
- Reduce metal ion release
- Improve surface hardness
- Increase scratch and wear resistance
- Improve biocompatibility
- Potentially benefit patients with metal sensitivity
Is the Golden Knee Implant Better than a Standard Implant?
The evidence is mixed.
Possible advantages
- Lower metal ion release
- Better scratch resistance
- Increased surface hardness
- Potential benefit in patients with proven metal allergy
What current evidence shows
There is no strong evidence that coated implants provide:
- Better pain relief
- Better knee function
- Longer implant survival
- Higher patient satisfaction for the average patient compared with high-quality conventional implants
Who should consider a Golden Knee Replacement?
A coated ("gold") implant may be appropriate for:
- Patients with confirmed nickel allergy
- Patients with documented metal hypersensitivity
- Patients who prefer a coated implant after informed discussion
Routine use in every patient is not currently supported by strong evidence.
